You wait in line to get your cup of coffee in the morning. You wait in line at the grocery store (I hope you haven't forgotten what's on your grocery list). Then, if you're like thousands of people across the country, you will wait in line tonight at the movie showing of the new Star Wars movie. Lines, lines, lines. Lines everywhere. We can't stand them, but should we actually hate lines?
First of all, the time you spend in lines is probably not THAT long anyway. Occupied time feels a lot shorter. Like they say, time flies when you're having fun. Also, if the duration of the wait is uncertain, then the wait seems longer. Tell someone their flight is delayed an hour instead of telling them to wait for further notice. Anxiety makes things worse, so wondering if you'll make your connecting flight from Seattle to New York City won't do you any good. And if you've got to wait for something, wait with some friends because research shows that solo waits are no fun at all.
But lines sure do heighten a particular experience. Let's get back to Star Wars because who doesn't love R2-D2 and C-3PO? If you're waiting in line tonight know that it's for good reason. It'll probably make the movie seem a whole lot better than it actually is. When a lot of people are gathered in a line, you know that there's something good to be waiting for. Besides, I'm sure you love looking behind you too see a long line behind you.
As the phrase extolling patience goes, "Good things come to those who wait."
